Les premiers habitants de Madagascar sont originaires du Sud-Est asiatique. Ils ont apporté avec eux leurs traditions, leur culture et leurs pratiques religieuses, y compris le famadihana (retournement des morts), une coutume bien ancrée dans la société malgache d’aujourd'hui. Ces peuples indonésiens et malaisiens, qui n'avaient pas encore découvert le véritable Dieu, Jésus-Christ, pratiquaient des cultes idolâtres. Ainsi, le famadihana n’est pas une tradition malgache originelle, mais une influence de ces premiers migrants.
